Evolutionary considerations on logical reasoning

چکیده

The logicians . . . are too much caught up in psychology . . . Logic is in no way a part of psychology. The Pythagorean theorem expresses the same thought for all men, while each person has its own representations, feelings and resolutions that are different from those of every other person. Thoughts are not psychic structures, and thinking is not an inner producing and forming, but an apprehension of thoughts which are already objectively given.

Abductive Reasoning with Filtered Circumscription∗

For logical artificial intelligence to be truly useful, its methods must scale to problems of realistic size. An interruptible algorithm enables a logical agent to act in a timely manner to the best of its knowledge, given its reasoning so far. This seems necessary to avoid analysis paralysis, trying to think of every potentiality, however unlikely, beforehand. These considerations prompt us to...

Modeling Argumentation with Labeled Deduction: Formalization and Theoretical Considerations

In the last years there has been an increasing demand of a variety of logical systems, prompted mostly by applications of logic in AI, logic programming and other related areas. Labeled Deductive Systems (LDS) were developed as a °exible methodology to formalize such a kind of complex logical systems. During the last decade defeasible argumentation has proven to be a con°uence point for many ap...

The proof theory and semantics of operator-free simulation language

Humans can at least apparently conduct deductive reasoning. Various logical inference systems have been developed in order to characterize such human reasoning. The strength of such a properly logical analysis of human reasoning lies in its productivity and predictive power; it enables the theorist to define precisely which data-space the theory covers and then mathematically prove that the the...

Some Key Notions in Non-monotonic Reasoning

This paper explores the role of some basic notions in the study of non-monotonic reasoning, such as validity, logical consequence, context, rules and assumptions. It offers some considerations about the relation between non-monotonicity and the ideal of perfect validity in logical inference and the pertinence of taking into account human limitations. I propose that work on non-monotonic reasoni...

Bias and Conflict: A Case for Logical Intuitions.

Human reasoning has been characterized as often biased, heuristic, and illogical. In this article, I consider recent findings establishing that, despite the widespread bias and logical errors, people at least implicitly detect that their heuristic response conflicts with traditional normative considerations. I propose that this conflict sensitivity calls for the postulation of logical and proba...
